Bounty Killer & Lady Saw Mines RIAA Gold With No Doubt 20 Years Later

Bounty Killer and Lady Saw both earn RIAA gold certifications with No Doubt 20 years after their hits.

The two dancehall icons collaborated with No Doubt in 2001 on two singles that were mega-hits back then. Bounty Killer collaborated with the pop band on “Hey Baby,” while Lady Saw collaborated on “Underneath It All.” Both singles were produced by legendary duo Sly & Robbie and are now certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), meaning they both sold over 500,000 copies in the United States.

The singles appeared on No Doubt’s classic album, Rock Steady, which was certified double platinum by the RIAA in October 2002. The project is now inching towards triple platinum certification with over 2.8 million copies sold in the United States. It’s also certified platinum in Canada by the Canadian equivalent to the RIAA, Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA).

“Hey Baby” earned No Doubt and Bounty Killer a Grammy award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 45th Annual Grammy Awards in 2003. The song saw major commercial success, but the music video created quite a bit of controversy, especially for Bounty Killer and his massive dancehall fan base in Jamaica and its diaspora. The final cut for the music video features No Doubt’s drummer Adrian Young appearing nude in one scene. The injection of that scene in the cut infuriated Bounty Killer, who asked the group to edit out that scene before releasing it. The video was eventually released with the nude scene with minimal censorship, which further infuriated the dancehall legend.

The video caused a rift between Bounty Killer and No Doubt, resulting in him boycotting several of their planned performances and almost never performed at the Superbowl with the band. Bounty spoke about the issue in 2017 during an interview where he expressed his anger almost two decades later.

“When I saw that naked man in the video I wanted to kill No Doubt literally,” Bounty said at the time. “It caused a big problem, it caused publishing problems, it caused relationship problems, everything broke down because that sh*t wasn’t in the video. It was a two-day shoot in California and Mike Myers shoot the f***ing video and no naked guy was in it, a naked guy has nothing to do with the storyline of the f***ing song. So when I saw it I told them take that sh*t out. Because that sh*t is going to cause me problems in my culture.”

Bounty Killer and Beenie Man were still at the height of their infamous feud, and of course, Beenie pounced on the opportunity to use it against his rival. Although Bounty and Beenie have mend fences since it’s unclear if Killer and No Doubt ever repaired their broken relationship over the music video.

Despite the controversies sparked by the video, the song saw major commercial success where it peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and reached the top ten in several major music markets worldwide.

No Doubt and Lady Saw’s “Underneath It All,” which was also released on the album Rock Steady, was released as a single in mid-2002 and would go on to see major commercial success. To date, it’s the band’s highest-charting US single, peaking at No. 3 on the Hot 100 chart and spent two weeks at that position.

Just like “Hey Baby” did in the prior year, “Underneath It All” earned No Doubt and Lady Saw a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 2004 at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards. Lady Saw didn’t appear in the music video for the track.

Pop Smoke’s Parents Delivers Strong Anti-Gun Violence PSA

Pop Smoke’s parents are campaigning against gun violence.

More than ever, gun violence is an ever-relevant topic in America today as the epidemic has been sweeping the nation exponentially each calendar year. It is quite unfortunate that the hip-hop community has lost so many artists this way in the last few years, and Pop Smoke is one such artist whose parents are trying to make a difference with his story.

Aubrey and Greg Jackson, the parents of the late New York rapper partnered with the Entertainers 4 Education Alliance/I WILL GRADUATE program to educate kids on the dangers of gun violence. In a video statement, Pop Smoke’s mother painted the reality of losing her son by outlining things she will never again be able to do with him.

“Because of gun violence, I’ll never see my son run up the front of our steps, taking them two at a time,” Mrs. Jackson says in the video. “He won’t ever take my hands again and dance with me. He won’t come into my room and muscle pose in the mirror. Gun violence destroys families. It must stop.”

The director for Entertainers 4 Education Alliance/I WILL GRADUATE explained how Pop Smoke’s influence even after his death has been instrumental in driving change. “We needed to get our youth’s attention fast and saw Pop Smoke’s polarizing music, life and death as a catalyst for positive change,” said Tonya Lewis Taylor.

“We reached out to his parents who wanted to honor their son’s legacy by participating in the video,” she continued. “We want the youth to considerably weigh the cost of their actions. There is no going back after that trigger is pulled. One moment of anger creates a lifetime of pain and anguish for the loved ones left behind.”

Pop Smoke lost his life to gun violence at the young age of 20 years. The rapper whose posthumous album topped the Billboard charts for multiple weeks in 2020 was gunned down in the Hollywood Hills home where he was staying last February. Investigators believe the fatal shots were fired during a home invasion but they also say the usual signs of a robbery were absent, according to NY Times. Four suspects were later arrested in the case.

While Pop was young, he had grand plans for his promising career. The rapper earned his first Top 10 album in the U.S. in the week that he was killed. Meet The Woo 2 debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard chart and has since been certified Gold by the RIAA. In July 2020, the rapper’s debut album Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon debuted atop the chart.

After his untimely death, the rapper’s estate issued a statement announcing that they would continue to roll out the rapper’s music and other projects that he was working on. Earlier this week, the trailer for the movie “Boogie” which will feature Pop Smoke’s posthumous film debut was released. The film is scheduled to arrive in March.

Bounty Killer Names Buju Banton’s “Til Shiloh” Among Best Reggae Albums Of All Time

Is Til Shiloh one of the best reggae albums of all time?

Bounty Killer is congratulating the Gargamel, Buju Banton for having one of the best roots reggae albums of all times- Til Shiloh. In a post made on his Instagram account, the artiste posted a photo with the caption “goals salute to the Gargamel @bujubanton and germaine @penthouse_records certified Gold. One of the best roots rock reggae albums of all times.”

The post featured the Gold bordered plaque that frames an image of a young Buju Banton. Bounty Killer has always had a high opinion of Buju Banton, having referred to the latter as among the greatest of all times (G.O.A.T), to include himself and Beenie Man.

Til Shiloh is the fourth album by Buju and was released in 1995 on Loose Canon Records. Many regard the album as the turning point for Buju’s international breakout and also signaled his seriousness towards the Rastafarian faith which the artiste practices.

The album was certified Gold by the RIAA, making it the Blessed artiste’s first Gold certified RIAA award, which was conferred in July 2020 on the 25th anniversary of the album’s release. At the virtual ceremony conferring the Gold certified album, Mitch Glazier, Chairman and CEO of RIAA, noted that it’s “becoming increasingly difficult these days to earn a gold record.” He added that it is also “incredibly significant that Til Shiloh is THE only RIAA gold certified roots reggae album,” which is a significant achievement for any artiste in the genre to accomplish.

Originally regarded as a rude boy, favourite songs on the album- Til I’m laid to rest, and Untold Stories were viewed as the transition from his rude boy persona to a roots-oriented fashion and persona. The album hit the U.S Billboard 200 at number 148 and the U.S Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums at number 27th. It reached the #2 spot on the U.S Top Reggae Albums chart.

The Plaque ceremony for the album was held this year in July, but it seems that the artist is only now receiving his plaque. Buju Banton continues to set the trend with his many plaques and accolades for his work. The artiste recently returned from spending time in jail in the United States for drug trafficking.

However, his past has not hindered him as the artiste has released a new album and many hit singles since his return to Jamaica.

Rapper Tay-K’s Hit “The Race” Now Certified Platinum

Tay-K maybe incarcerated but his music, in this case, “The Race” is still bumping.

The 17-year-old rapper released the song while he was on the run from feds after going on a crime spree. The single “The Race” is now platinum. The single went viral last summer and is showing no signs of slowing down. The track also spawned a number of remixes from rappers like Lil Yachty and Tyga. The song garnered enough buzz to prompt Tay-K’s fans and some fellow rappers to call for his release from prison via the hashtag #FreeTayK.

I should also note that Tay-K is facing some pretty serious charges including murder, kidnapping and armed robbery. Despite his lengthy rap sheet, “The Race” has now surpassed a million units in sales as of January 12th, roughly six months after its release, according to the RIAA. The viral single was recorded and the video was shot while Tay-K was on the run after escaping house arrest. He was eventually captured and placed behind bars and once fans realized his ordeal it further fuels the streaming online. The song peaked at No. 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Tay-K is now a platinum-selling rapper which is not bad considering he is just 17 and facing possibly decades in prison. Last year November, rumors surfaced claiming that K signed a lucrative record deal, but a rep for the rapper later dismissed the reports as bogus. Sources say, however, that a deal is currently on the table with conditions that he can beat his murder case. He is expected to go on trial for at least two capital murder charges this year and a few lesser but still serious charges.

If he is freed this year, Tay-K is lining up to be the next breakthrough young rapper. If convicted, he could be sent to prison for decades.

2 Chainz Announced New Album Coming Soon

2 Chainz has announced that he has a new album coming sooner than later.

The Atlanta rapper made the announcement on his Twitter page on Tuesday night while posting some photos from his new TRU (The Real University) photoshoot. “New album on the way, I’m farther than I thought I was !!! Naw I’m lying I knew I had some shit brewing #nocap #drenchGOD,” he wrote. In other words he been hitting the studio laying down some tracks for the new project and he now feels confidence enough to publicly announced it.

These days artists only revealed new project when they are a few weeks away from being released, sometimes even days away. What makes this project interesting is that 2 Chainz released his last album Pretty Girls Like Trap Music in June, so if this new body of work arrives before year end it means he would have given us two albums in a matter of a few months. For Pretty Girls Like Trap Music, Tity Boi taps some big names like Nicki Minaj, Drake, Gucci Mane, Migos, Travis Scott, and more. The album was recently certified gold by the RIAA and is on the way to getting platinum certification.

Chris Brown currently has a lot to be celebrating right now with eight of his singles getting multi-platinum certifications.

On October 3, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) issued eight new platinum plaques to Chris Brown for some songs that didn’t get certified in the past even though they sold millions. One song “Look At Me Now” featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes which was released in 2011 was certified five times platinum by the RIAA.

[Intro]
Yeah, ooh
The hotel room, always workin’
Yeah, yeah

[Verse]
Out in California countin’ up my blessings
Only 24 with a multi million dollar pension
Off my catalogue
That’s ’cause I’m a don like Cheadle
‘Cause I’m on
And I got more songs than the Beatles, woah
That’s a stretch?
Yeah, I guess
But you get the jist
Laughin’ at the skeptics ’cause
I always knew I’d get this rich
Family knew and Bugus knew
That’s probably about it
Quicker you come in the game
The quicker you go out it
Y’all ain’t really ’bout shit
Y’all ain’t got no substance
Yea I heard your little viral song
Some fun, dumb shit
Some one month shit
You’re a seasonal rapper
You a bitch the world fucks
‘Cause we leavin you after
Don’t hit my phone with some stupid shit
That’s not why I gave you my new number, you stupid bitch
Delete and block you
I don’t have to, but I want to
I’m just trimming the fat
Haters drowning in doubt
Meanwhile I’m swimming in cash
I was never cool with y’all, don’t try to link up now
Cuz my train left the station, but it’s a brink’s truck now
I switch up styles
Like I was dating Badu
It’s common to hate on the truth
I’m carving my name on the roof of
Hip Hop then breakin on through
To the otherside like Jim Morrison
Guzzlin’ gin wondering if I drink more than him
Scary thought
I got the juice like Barry Bonds
I ain’t tryna blend in like white kids with sperrys on
You’re faker than these rappers who keep tryna claim indie
Major connections millions behind you
You’re not indie
Get offended, then I got you by Hip-Hops’ collar
‘Cause Bugus told me that only a hit-dog hollers
Top dollars what they pay me for the flows now-a-days
Free weed, free women, free clothes now-a-days
All we got is time, so my time is my investor
I’m single, so I save money and live better
I need my plaques advanced
Tell the RIAA
Underrated and overlooked
Yes but never underpaid
Blew up off the web like Peter Parker
Went from flying 32F
To private jets getting chartered
This is my departure
Use to think it was delayed
‘Till I let go of the wheel and let my faith fly my plane
That’s when I started taking off
Millions in my bank account
Manifested everything
Became what I would think about
20,000 dollars for the show is what I’m making now
And that’s just the guarantee
Before the merch and meet and greets
And that’s only accurate as of today
I’m St. Louis with my hoes fly ’em back to LA
That’s when I’m there ’cause really lately I’ve been all over
Studios my gym I lift my family up I’m all shoulders
I fall forward I don’t ever fail
I went from past due bills
To 50 bands I’m getting better mail
Every sale I make I keep 100%
I put in overtime cuz momma owes 100 in debt
That’s low ballin’
No calling my phone I’m in Greece
Self pressures at my neck
Aegean Sea at my feet
Took my mom around the world
My bucket list is ever changing
Women wet on arrival fuckin’ chicks is better famous
I’m poppin from the Southside to the Sudan
This time last year mom applied for a food stamps yeah
And now it’s Michelin star restaurants in every country new guala
The only one in the whole place below 40 with two commas
I Love the way I did it
Can’t nobody tell me shit
‘Cause ain’t nobody make me hot
And ain’t nobody make me rich
Hope that cash that your flashings been provisioned for your taxes
‘Cause the IRS is watching
Flossing could be problematic
You should chill, act like you’ve seen some money before
I can’t date a chick that’s never left the country before
So take your bra off, put your hair up
Put my hoodie on
Eyes are windows to the soul
Yours say “put me on”
I got you baby every morning like I’m mark McGrath
And your body and my hands is my next collab
I’m texting back but not enough because my life is popping
You hop from dude to dude and club to club
I’m island hoppin’
Reminiscin’ back before I had one track
Back when I would put a half a gram in blunt wraps
When me and Bugus got so high before our graduation
I think I got too high, I don’t remember graduatin’
Laughing thinking fuck diplomas I got plaques now
Use to celebrate 1,000 plays looking back now
I realize that the journey is everything
There ain’t no destination man the journey is everything
Looking back I realize the journey is everything
Ain’t no destination man the journey is everything
