Coronavirus pandemic: France crosses 100,000 COVID-19 deaths

Al Jazeera English shows that more than 100,000 people have died so far of COVID-19 in France.
For some of the millions who were infected but recovered, the battle against the virus was hard and at times traumatic.
Al Jazeera’s Natacha Butler spoke to some people in Paris who accused the government of not doing enough to stop the outbreak from getting worse.
The COVID-19 pandemic in France is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was confirmed to have reached France on 24 January 2020, when the first COVID-19 case in both Europe and France was identified in Bordeaux. The first five confirmed cases were all individuals who had recently arrived from China.
On 31 March 2021, Macron announced a third national lockdown to commence on 3 April 2021, which mandated for all of April 2021; the closure of non-essential shops, the suspension of school attendance, a ban on all domestic travel and a nationwide curfew from 7pm-6am.

Turkey’s COVID-19 explosion brings harsh restrictions.
Al Jazeera English shows that a nationwide weekend curfew was in effect in Turkey to try to stop a sharp rise in new coronavirus infections. At least 30,000 daily cases were reported on that week. More restrictions were introduced in an effort to contain the outbreak. Al Jazeera’s Sinem Koseoglu reports from Istanbul, Turkey.
The COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey is part of the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).
The first case in Turkey was recorded on March 11, 2020, when a local returned home from a trip to Europe. The first death due to COVID-19 in the country occurred on 15 March, 2020. Turkey has stood out from the rest of Europe by not ordering a legal lockdown. The government kept many businesses open, and allowed companies to set their own guidelines regarding workers.
As of 14 March 2021, Turkey has 2,879,390 confirmed cases, 2,701,076 recoveries, 29,489 deaths, and a death rate of 343 per million people, the 66th highest rate globally.
The resulting wave of infections never came close to overwhelming the Turkish health system, which has the highest number of intensive care units in the world at 46.5 beds per 100,000 people (compared to 9.6 in Greece, 11.6 in France, and 12.6 in Italy).
As of March 1, 2021, Turkey’s observed case-fatality rate stands at 1.06%. This low (compared to other countries) case-fatality rate has generated various explanations including the relative rarity of nursing homes, favorable demographics, long legacy of contact tracing, high number of intensive care units, universal health care, and a lockdown regime that led to a higher proportion of positive cases among working-age adults.

Indonesia: Covid-19 Coronavirus death toll is 38,573

Indonesia: Covid-19 Coronavirus death toll is 38,573
Indonesia surpasses one million COVID-19 cases.
Al Jazeera English shows that Indonesia surpassed one million cases of coronavirus on Tuesday. The rate of virus infection has been steadily climbing in the country for months. More than 10,000 cases have been reported every day in recent weeks. However, low testing rates mean the crisis is believed to be much bigger than those figures suggest. Some hospital rooms are full, so ill people are being sent back home. Al Jazeera’s Jessica Washington joins us live from Jakarta for the latest updates.
The COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia is part of the ongoing global worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It was confirmed to have spread to Indonesia on 2 March 2020, after a dance instructor and her mother tested positive for the virus. Both were infected from a Japanese national.
By 9 April 2020, the pandemic had spread to all 34 provinces in the country. Jakarta, West Java, and Central Java are the worst-hit provinces.
As of 15 March 2021, Indonesia has reported 1,425,044 cases, the highest in Southeast Asia, ahead of the Philippines. With 38,573 deaths, Indonesia ranks third in Asia and 17th in the world. Review of data, however, indicated that the number of deaths may be much higher than what has been reported as those who died with acute COVID-19 symptoms but had not been confirmed or tested were not counted in the certain official death figure.
Indonesia is officially the Republic of Indonesia. This is a country in Southeast Asia and Oceania between the Indian and Pacific oceans. It consists of more than 17 thousand islands, including Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, and parts of Borneo and New Guinea. Indonesia is the world’s largest island country and the 14th-largest country by land area, at 1,904,569 square kilometers. With more than 270 million people, Indonesia is the world’s 4th-most populous country. Java (the world’s most populous island) is home to more than half of the country’s population.
The sovereign state is a presidential, constitutional republic with an elected legislature. It has 34 provinces, of which 5 have special status. The country’s capital, Jakarta, is the second-most populous urban area in the world. The country shares land borders with Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and the eastern part of Malaysia. Other neighboring countries include Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Australia, Palau, and India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Despite its large population and densely populated regions, Indonesia has vast areas of wilderness that support one of the world’s highest levels of biodiversity.
Indonesian (locally referred to as Bahasa Indonesia) is the primary lingua franca. Indonesian is spoken by over 94% of the population, but it is the primary language of only 20% of the population. Javanese (Jawa) is the most common primary language, spoken by over 30% of the population.

Peru deploys army on border with Ecuador to slow spread of COVID-19.
Al Jazeera English shows that Peru’s armed forces have tightened border security with Ecuador to prevent mostly Venezuelan migrants from crossing over. They say they are trying to stop the spread of coronavirus as hospitals in the country struggle to cope. Al Jazeera’s Teresa Bo reports from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The COVID-19 pandemic in Peru is part of the worldwide global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was reported to have spread to Peru on 6 March 2020, when a 25-year-old man who had travelled to Spain, France, and the Czech Republic tested positive. On 15 March 2020, President Martín Vizcarra announced a country-wide lockdown, closing borders, restricting domestic travel, and forbidding nonessential business operations, excluding health facilities, food vendors, pharmacies, and financial institutions.
Peru has a total population of 32 million. Peru has a total of 1,002 intensive care unit (ICU) beds available as of May 2020, and was working on expanding its nationwide ventilator stock from 40 to a desired 540 machines. Engineering and production are supplied by the Peruvian Armed Forces. As of June 2020, oxygen was in short supply.
Peru is officially the Republic of Peru. This is a country in western South America. It is bordered in the north by Ecuador and Colombia, in the east by Brazil, in the southeast by Bolivia, in the south by Chile, and in the south and west by the Pacific Ocean. Peru is a megadiverse country with habitats ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coastal region in the west to the peaks of the Andes mountains extending from the north to the southeast of the country to the tropical Amazon Basin rainforest in the east with the Amazon river. At 1.28 million km squared, Peru is the 19th largest country in the world, and the 3rd largest in South America.
Peruvian territory was home to several ancient cultures. Ranging from the Norte Chico civilization starting in 3500 BCE, the oldest civilization in the Americas and one of the 5 cradles of civilization, to the Inca Empire, the largest state in the pre-Columbian Americas, the territory now including Peru has one of the longest histories of civilization of any country, tracing its heritage back to the 4th millennia BCE.
The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and established a viceroyalty that encompassed most of its South American territories, with its capital in Lima. Peru formally proclaimed independence in 1821.
